Coiled between lake and mountains, Annecy deserves its nickname of "Venice of the Alps". Palais de l'Île

The Palais de l'Isle is probably the most famous building in Annecy and, without any doubts, one of the most photographed sights in France. The palace, built in the 12th century, was once a prison, and today hosts exhibits about local architecture and history.

Lovers' Bridge

Legend says that if two persons kiss on the middle of the bridge, their love will never end. Built around 1906 to replace an older bridge, Pont des Amours links the European Gardens to the Pâquier park. It offers a viewthat hasthe lake on one side and the town on the other.

The Old Town

Jardins de l'Europe

Around 250 trees, such as a tulip tree, pines and giant sequoia trees, are found in the lovely Gardens of Europe, where you can enjoy a walk by the lake in a sunny afternoon. This romantic English garden, designed by Henri Porreaux in 1863, is a heavenly spot in town where children are free to play from a walking distance to the old town, while you sit on one of the benches in front of the lake.

Basilica of the Visitation

Dominating the city, this cathedral symbolises the rich religious past of the city and gives an indirect insight of the muted power struggle between Calvinism and Catholism. The Visitation Basilica protects the bodies of Saint Joan of Chantal and Saint Francis of Sales, as well as a 38-ton chime, named Marie-Francoise.

Le Pâquier

The Pâquier is a big, free lawn located next to the lake in the centre of the town. Given to the town probably by the Count of Menton to hold the military exercises of the young soldiers, it is now a very peaceful area where it is allowed to picnic.

This church was built in the late 14th century and definitely worth a visit. After paying a visit to the garden, take some time to admire its architecture, characterized by the huge marble columns, and intricate stained-glass window designs. Lake Festival

Every year, the first weekend of August, around 200,000 visitors gather in Annecy to enjoy one of the biggest pyrotechnic shows in Europe, the "Fête du lac", which includes 70 minutes of fireworks in rhythm with music, lights and special effects over the lake.

Perrière Bridge

This bridge links two parts of the old town and is right in front of the Palais de l'Île. Pont Perrière is a perfect spot for taking pictures, both when there are flowers on it and when it's decorated with Christmas lights.

Eglise Saint-François de Sales

The Saint-Francis of Sales Church, listed as a historical monument, is located near the Palais de l'Île, across the Thiou river. Even if the facade seems a bit austere, the interior of the church is luxurious: the baroque style is expressed through an organ, paintings and a magnificent altar. This church used to host religious relics, such as the graves of Saint Francis and Saint Joan of Chantal, which were there before being transported to the Visitation Basilica.

Lake Annecy

The Lac d'Annecy is the second largest lake in France. Take a long walk along it, or rent a bike if you're up for a longer tour, and admire the scenery of the Alps. Annecy Cathedral

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is a Roman Catholic cathedral also listed as a national monument by the French government. It houses an organ that was built between 1840 and 1842 by Nicolas-Antoine Lété, an organ builder of the French king. A lot of concerts are organised there, especially in summer.

Venetian Carnival

Best Time to Visit

No matter what time of the year you decide to visit this city, the "Venice of the Alps" will let you capture the beauty of its history and nature in each season. Many towns close to Annecy house winter sports resorts and open their doors in winter, so if you're interested in coming to the region for skiing on the French side of the Alps, you should definitely choose the cold season. Otherwise, if cold and skiing are not your thing, consider planning your trip in spring: even if summer means the best days in terms of weather (also, the lake is at its warmest), it is also when tourism is at its peak, so you'd do better coming in spring to enjoy the city on foot and admire the beautiful flowers blooming all along the canals. Annecy also has a bustling cultural scene, whose offer covers the whole year. The two main summer events are the Lake Festival (, a spectacular pyrotechnic show over the lake, and the International Animation Film Festival (, held respectively in August and June. If you come in the fall season, don't miss the chance to see the "Déscente des Alpages": every year in October, farmers take their livestock down from the mountains to the streets of the centre, where a number of artisans and farmers display and sell their products, and folk bands play all day. There are several car rental companies in the airport where you can rent one, but if you decide to return it to the French sector you may be asked to pay an additional fee (same thing happens if you rent a car in the French sector and you return it to the Swiss one). If you search for a bus (, you will need to take a Transalis one (line T72), with many departures each day from the airport. Otherwise, you can also take one of the regular trains departing from Geneva-Cornavin Station (in the city centre), which you can reach in 6 minutes with one of the trains departing (5 times per hour) from the airport. Public Transport

SIBRA ( runs the local transport system and links, with an efficient bus service, the communes of the Grand Annecy. Tickets ( can be purchased from the stations, the tourist information office and in kiosks (, and travel cards are also available in these shops. The Espace SIBRA (21 Rue de la Gare) is the main transport information office, it opens 6 days a week and is close to the SNCF station. The same company also offer a bike rental service, called Vélonecy ( more than 200 bikes can be rented and used to move around the city in the respect of the environment. You can choose between classic bikes, electric bikes and folding bikes (very quick to set up), and even if renting one daily, weekly or monthly, depending on how much you want to stay in Annecy (more information: / [email protected]). An alternative to SIBRA to stroll around Annecy city centre is the rental company Roul'ma Poule (, with two shops (in Annecy and Annecy-le-Vieux). There you can rent not only bikes (classic, electric or tandem bikes), but also rollers (, kayaks ( and paddle boards (, for an amazing tour of the lake.
