Croagh Patrick

An ancient place, Croagh Patrick has long been a place of pilgrimage and discovery - no wonder it has inspired so many myths and legends! Archaeological evidence suggests settlement on this cone-shaped mountain as far back as 3000BC. It is said in the 6th century St. Patrick (Ireland's patron saint) undertook a 40 day Lenten pilgrimage of penance here. (It is also the mountain from which he allegedly chased the snakes out of Ireland!) For this reason the mountain is the site of many pilgrimages, as well as "Reek Day", a ceremonial day in July. Ideal for hiking, one can enjoy stunning views of Clew Bay, and borrow climbing sticks from the Visitor Centre if needed. The mountain is 5 minutes from the town of Westport and also a day-trip possibility for those based in Galway.

Best Time to Visit

Galway can be visited nearly all year long. Influenced by the Gulf Stream, Ireland has a mild summer with temperatures generally ranging from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius (60-70 Fahrenheit), while the winter brings 4 to 7 degree Celsius (30-40 degrees Fahrenheit), and can get quite cold. While the city gets lively especially during the warmer months, with many events and people sitting outside in restaurants and cafes, the winter can also be cosy when it comes to meeting people at a bar, or going shopping.
