The old town of Luleå – Gammelstad Church Town – located 9 km outside of Luleå city center, is the largest and best preserved church town in Sweden. This unique cultural environment with its medieval church and 408 small church cottages was added to Unesco’s world heritage list in 1996. Through history visitors to the church travelling from afar, have been staying overnight in the cottages ever since the 16th century. In the middle of the town you will find Nederluleå church – It is richly decorated with one of the finest altar screens in the country, dating back to 1520's. Don’t miss Hägnan in Gammelstad – an open-air museum showing an historical environment with buildings from the 18th until the 20th century. Hägnan gives a realistic picture of how an old village along the coastline of Norrbotten could look like. The church town is a popular destination for exursions and perfect for picnics.

Hiking in Luleå is almost like strolling through the history of this unique city. For instance, you can begin by hiking across the large shingle fields on Bälingeberget – the first spot to rise from the sea, following land uplift after the recession of the inland ice sheet. At the time, Bälingeberget was just in islet in the middle of the sea and the waves shaped the rocks that now make hiking on the mountaina fascinating experience. Continue through the history of Luleå by visiting the place we now call Gammelstad Church Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once the centre of Luleå, before the city was moved in the 17th century. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and there are also many rare birds in the area. Here, you can hike on what was once the seabed, now a beautiful forest with pleasant walking paths. During the summer, South harbor plan turns into a playa in the middle of the city. A place of life and movement, accessible to all. The Pontus Bath was built in 1957 and was then one of Sweden's most modern bath houses. Today, it is a charming bath in 50's architecture. At the Pontus bath there are elite gymnastics and gymnastics, family bathing and swimming lessons for schools and the general public. Luleå's diving clubs also have training and training here. Steel Park in Luleå is Sweden's northernmost concrete park for skateboarding, bmx-bike, kickbike. The park is suitable for beginners as well as advanced and professional riders. Steel Park is open 24 hours a day during the summer months. Here you will find: ditch with curb, manual pads, lyonbanks, granite curbs, rails, wallride, bump, fullpipe, coping, eurogap, hips, staircase, handrail, all partly divided into a bowl section and a street section. The entire Steel Park is approximately 1300m² and there are a lot of different obsticles for beginners and more advanced riders.

The airport museum F 21 is located just outside the guard to Norrbotten's airplane fleet, F 21. The air museum museums describe the air defense of Upper Norrland from the early 1940s with the extremely extreme climate of the region.

The Luleå cathedral was build after the great fire in Luleå city in 1887. The fire completely destroyed the old church on the site, Gustaf's church, which was from the late 1700s. Luleå cathedral is built in brick in neo-Gothic style. When the church was opened in 1893, it was called Oscar Fredrik's church after King Oscar II. In 1904, the Luleå cathedral became Luleå's foundation. The architect who designed the cathedral was Adolf Emil Melander, Stockholm. The cathedral is cross-shaped, 54 meters long and 35 meters wide. The church tower is just over 60 meters high. Architect Knut Nordenskjöld was behind the new design. Wall paintings and star decorations in the ceiling were removed and the entire interior was painted white. Remains of the old style still appear in church entrances.

Mountain Bälingeberget is an easily reached nature reserve where traces of the inland ice are clearly visible; remains include large areas of rubble fields, shoreline embankments where you can see the different levels of the sea, caves and long erosion boundaries. Inspection has revealed nearly 200 different varieties of plants in the area. The reserve has a number of easily accessible trails, picnic areas with fireplaces and wood, toilets and waste disposal facilities. Enjoy a lovely view over Luleå river from the top of the mountain.
