The Sachsenhausen area, south of the river Main, is a more charming shopping area that caters to younger people. The main street, Schweizerstraße, is full of delis, bookshops, trendy cafes and fashion stores. The general pace of things is also slower here than over on Zeil.

On Saturdays, there is a large flea market from 9:00 to 14:00 that takes place at the Sachsenhausen riverbank or in the Osthafen, along Lindleystraße. The market attracts bargain-hunters who are looking for antiques, second-hand goods or arts and crafts.

Go to Berger Straße on a Saturday or Wednesday morning and experience the farmers market by the Uhrtürmchen clock tower. With its wide variety of fresh produce, including many other goods, this is one of the largest and most popular markets in Frankfurt.

Those who are looking for funkier shopping should go to the Bornheim area. Berger Straße in particular has exciting design, fashion and vintage shops, including cafes, restaurants and bars, making it the perfect place where to combine shopping with a relaxing coffee or lunch break.

Near Zeil, there is the Schillerstraße that has a nice market every Friday morning to afternoon. A market in a business orientated district that brings the area to live once a week. Here you can buy fresh food and vegetables, but also handicrafts and a bunch of oddities.

The boutique Kontrast, on Hanauer Landstraße 297, in the Ostend area, has six floors of modern furniture design in a distinctively East Berlin style building. Unique and high-quality items are sold here and, although the prices are high and you may not buy anything, it is easy to lose yourself among the beautiful pieces.

From late spring (April to May) to early autumn (including summer) is the best time to visit Frankfurt. This is when the city enjoys mild temperatures and sunny days, and when trees are in full bloom making it a pleasure to explore the city on foot. The summer is normally warm, at about 25°C and this is the peak season when to expect a lot of tourists, fairs, outdoor events and festivals. From mid-September to mid-October the city gets ready for the beautiful golden autumn.
