The City

Lake Havasu City reserves a uniqueness simply for the fact that the historic London Bridge now makes its home in the town. To supplement, the town was only established in the last century: the entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch created Lake Havasu in 1963 as a planned, self-reliant community. Drawn to the Colorado River along the California-Arizona border, McCulloch foresaw the town’s success. Lake Havasu City’s success as a tourist destination incremented with McCulloch’s purchasing of the London Bridge from England for $2,460,000. Following its transfer and reconstruction on the Lake Havasu peninsula, the London Bridge opened officially in 1971. Beyond its feats of man-made architecture, Lake Havasu possesses immense, natural architecture. Soft beaches and soothing tides are featured all year-round, and the brilliant blue waters of the lake are a dream for fishing and swimming. Volcanic rock, geodes, jaspers, obsidian, turquoise, and agate can be unearthed along Lake Havasu City’s desert as well. To make for an interesting fact, Lake Havasu is home to more lighthouses than any other city in the United States.

London Bridge

In 1958, a chance flight over the Lake Havasu area by entrepreneur Robert McCulloch later led to the founding of Lake Havasu City. A decade after the city’s establishment, McCulloch and town planner C.V. Wood had the grand idea to purchase the London Bridge from England and reconstruct it as a tourist attraction. The London Bridge is now the second most frequented attraction in all of Arizona, second only to the Grand Canyon.

Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge

The Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge is found at the far reaches of southeastern Lake Havasu. Rumored to contain the largest surviving cottonwood-willow woodlands of the lower Colorado River, the Refuge covers 6,000 acres. Perhaps most importantly, the Bill Williams River serves as a comfortable refuge to over 300 species of birds and waterfowl. There is a number of endangered species currently in propagation, including the razorback sucker fish and bony-tail chubs—which are indigenous to the Bill Williams River. Additionally, the Audubon Society named the Refuge an area of global significance in 2011.

Havasu Area Transit operates several routes, stopping at bus stops in Lake Havasu City, Desert Hills and the Shops at Lake Havasu. All 4 routes connect at 25 minutes after the hour at the downtown transfer center and will provide the rider a free transfer to another route. The scheduled route service operates Monday through Friday from 6am to 7pm. and Saturday from 8am to 6pm. HAT is closed Sundays and all City Holidays except Good Friday and Veterans Day.
